Doing that thing I do

2009 Out!

Accomplishments: Moved zero times – lived in the same apartment for one year and counting; bought a fish that defies odds by continuing to live; got a promotionish thing; went on “minibreaks” to San Diego, Mitchell, Madison, and Chicago; ran a 5k; parallel parked once (with a coach); found a bunch of reasons to dress in costumes

Not so positive things: Had some alcohol-related embarrassments; got pneumonia again

Year’s best: Running a 5K.  Admit it, you did not see that coming.

Year’s least best: Pneumonia + hey your cat is dead = worst birthday yet

TV Show Addictions: Thanks to Netflix and “momflix,” I got hooked on BSG, Veronica Mars, White Collar, Castle, Dollhouse and Torchwood
But surprisingly I hated:
True Blood
But you know I’m going to love it:
Glee is on the Netflix queue

New favorites (books) in no particular order: A Fraction of the Whole, Steve Toltz; Life of Pi, Yann Martel; Downtown Owl, Chuck Klosterman; The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Junot Diaz; Interpreter of Maladies, Jhumpa Lahiri; The Monsters of Templeton, Lauren Groff; The Road, Cormac McCarthy; the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris (making the True Blood hatred extra-weird)

Book clubs currently involved in: 4
Book clubs planning to quit:
3
The only real resolution I have for 2010: Stop joining book clubs

New favorites (movies): (500) Days of Summer, The Hangover, Up, It Happened One Night (well, it’s new to me)

Movies that suck: The Ugly Truth, Bride Wars, Men Who Stare at Goats, Final Destination 3D, The X-Files: I Want to Believe (again, new to me, and just darn disappointing)

New favorites (music): “I’m Yours,” the Asian boy with the ukulele; “Body Language,” Jesse McCartney feat. T-Pain (breakin’ it down artica-let-ly!); “Wheels,” Foo Fighters; “Breakeven,” The Script; “The More Boys I Meet,” Carrie Underwood

I hate you (songs): I’m surprisingly low on song-hatred this year.  I didn’t even hate the Christmas music season (aka October – December).  What’s happened to me?

Other addictions: New activities — going on historical tours, attending concerts of bands I don’t know, supporting new local businesses

Quotes of the year:
“Gosh, that man is handsome.  He could be a figure skater!” – My mother, in Target
“Why does hurting laugh?” – Steve
“Rachel is a geek!” – Sister T
“But no matter how cute the guy, you should never be willing to turn into a human/mermaid for them, okay? Don’t you remember the 98 Degrees song from Mulan? Stay true to your heart. And then the oceans will part.” – Sabrina/Disney

“Every tree, every growing thing
as it grows, says this truth:
You harvest what you sow.
With life as short as a half-taken breath,
don’t plant anything but love.” – Jelaluddin Rumi

Goals for 2009:
Learn to play poker and the harmonica (not at the same time)
– Watch less television, read more books
– Go rock climbing
– Figure some things out (this was on my list last year, too, but there’s still other things out there, wouldn’t you know it)
– Learn to parallel park without someone coaching me through it
